What did you notice about their organization, content, tools used, learning outcomes?
I notice that a lot of different types of media is used – text, video, visuals, audio, etc. There is a high degree of interaction with these elements in many wikis, see the maps in FHS Wolves Den. Wikis can be a collaboration of many classrooms and their project related to the wiki. It can be a wiki created for a class that has already expired, yet others are still using the lessons and information as well as continuing the wiki.
I am really excited at the implications and activities I can do this coming year with wikis. This will take some time because my 3rd grade students will be using keyboards, learning computer programs, while simultaneously working on the student expectation of the learning objective. Project based learning using wikis will be able to fast forward the learning process as each student group does the research and project, teacher provides direction, facilitates the learning process & verifies the accuracy (when necessary) of information, students learn the information from others when their projects are shared with the everyone in the class. Students’ learning curve is multiplied by the number of groups sharing information.
What was missing?
I compared what I saw in the wikis with the Bloom’s Taxonomy Wheel. If you include all the wikis, I saw ALL elements of all learning levels defined by Benjamin Bloom in his learning wheel through various media and activities. The only thing I can say that I did not see was tangible work products. However, I did see photographs of student creations, producing projects using both technology based and real world applications.
What could you do differently or better?
All I can do is explore the wikis, take those ideas, tweak it to the requirements of our state and district, modify it so that it meets the needs of my students, share it with my colleagues and get on board the 21st Century Wave. I want my students to see what others do and what I know they are capable of doing.
Share initial ideas you have for wiki use in classroom, professional or personal learning.
I need some time to zoom in on more models and examples before I begin my journey of wiki creation and implementation. Having taken the MISD PD Intel Teach to the 21st Century, I already have a plan in place for my first wiki. I’ve just got to create the wiki. My students studied ecosystems, animals, and environmental issues in a project based learning activity in which we used technology and internet. They created Power Point Presentations (I may change to Prezi) and presented their findings to the class. Students chose ecosystems and worked in groups describing the environment, plants, and animals. Then each student chose an animal to report. Lastly, students explained what we need to do to help their identified ecosystem, animal, and plant. Students conducted oral presentations of their ecosystem, animal, and description of ways to help. I will be creating this wiki the first chance that I get. SOON!
