Thing #7. Creating Community Through Commenting

My thoughts on Commenting
The two most alarming and enlightening links that I visited were related to cyber bullying and copyright laws and/or edublog etiquette.

In 2007, there was a blogging attack of proportional measures against Kathy Sierra, a Web Developer and blog writer of “Creating Passionate users" . I wanted to know what happened, so I followed a trail. I didn’t get all of the details, or arrive at the original event that prompted the verbal attacks. However, I gained the insight of things that can happen and things to be cognizant about as you post and comment in cyberspace. Seems there is a group of people who think it’s OK to threaten via the web and are claiming violation of 1st amendment speech to get away with such behavior. See the story in The Tech Chronicles of the San Francisco Chronicle, The attack on Kathy Sierra and a CNN news brief related to the story.
How do you feel about blogger bullying and 1st ammendment, free speech?

My Experience with Commenting
For this TechnoProf (Technology Professor) training for the 21st Century, I’ve been following a lot of blogs and websites for ideas, information, and conversation. I’ve followed a lot of blogs as well as reviewed the assigned blogs and their attached links. Posting and commenting are somewhat more difficult. I get lost in all of the information & can’t stay focused & can’t get out. Time flies when you're cyberlinked (engaged in technology and following links).

One thing I do know is that I’m following my blog to see if anyone posts. I must admit It IS exciting when someone responds. Even when it’s just one sentence, “Yea! The reader could relate to what I was saying in some way, Enough to Respond”. I sometimes feel a certain responsibility to comment on a blog that I have read. I wonder what the blog writer thinks about when they read my comment – if it even matters to them what I think. I have the desire to respond to anyone who has replied to my blog post, though I’m not always sure what to say. I’m looking forward to an interactive conversation when several of us get involved in the discussion.

I guess I need to work on editing my writings and/or “how to gain the interest of the reader And KEEP IT”. I’m hoping for some interaction and dialogue. I’m looking forward to communication throughout this 21st century technology exploration – teaching & learning – learning & teaching.

My Research on Commenting
Drake’s Takes, Edublogger Etiquette, Darren Draper blogs with his readers sharing their views on proper use and comment etiquette and copyright issues while posting on the internet. I find copyright a little worrisome because I like to identify my sources….When I can….So often, I don’t know where the information originates.
Have you struggled with not only knowing HOW to reference your ideas but also knowing WHO to reference?

Another thought-provoking post!!! You made me think of as a librarian, so much of my efforts are to teach our youth (and teachers) the new technologies that are out there, and how to use them. I think a new direction I will add this year, as I try to introduce more blogging, is how to thoughtfully comment. How is that NOT an English grade?

Social skills are something we MUST teach our students and it's not in the curriculum - well some TEKS can be stretched to include courtesy and appropriate social interactions. TEKS should inlcude the "Golden Rule".
